Yellowstone in Winter - a place of many intense and unique visual and sensory pleasures. Ice-encrusted waterfalls; steam rising in the cold air from geysers; ghostly, rime-encrusted trees around hot springs; mountain passes and valley meadows blanketed with deep, dry powder to ski on; and potential wildlife sightings. All this and much more await on this 11-day cross-country ski adventure into various backcountry areas in and around Yellowstone National Park. Part of the appeal of Yellowstone in winter is the lack of crowds due to lack of access. In this adventure we spend time around Old Faithful, a Park favorite, but will also ski in areas that typically see less use, thereby sampling more of this beautiful national treasure. To allow maximum flexibility in selecting our daily ski tours, we will stay in West Yellowstone, MT and drive or snowcoach to our trailheads in the Gallatin Range and Yellowstone. All tours will be day trips in the 6 to 12 mile range at an altitude of 7000-8500 feet. Incredible wonders reward your efforts. This trip is designed for the intermediate skier, no beginners please. You need to have solid skills including good downhill control and turning ability and have skied in non-groomed settings. We generally ski in areas that may be tracked by others, but we normally do not ski in "groomed" areas. Participants should be in good physical condition and wider backcountry Nordic equipment is recommended. The tours selected will emphasize touring and scenic pleasure over mostly moderate terrain. The trip is not designed for maximum vertical or extreme skiing. Due to federal regulations, trip size is limited to 12 so early application is strongly encouraged. We fly into Bozeman MT, pick up vehicles, and head for our home base in West Yellowstone. The vehicles will also be used for our transportation to the best snow for most of our ski tours. We will stay at an AAA 3-diamond rated hotel in West Yellowstone. Typical accommodations will be 2 persons per room (queen beds). A full menu breakfast with buffet will be provided each morning in the attached restaurant.
