Explore the Saastal and Mattertal valleys in Switzerland. They surround the chiseled rock pyramid of the Matterhorn, the most recognized mountain on the European continent. Do fabulous day hikes starting from the car-free town of Saas Fee. Stroll along glaciers and follow balcony trails through larch forests and lush meadows. Then transfer to Taesch to start our six-day trek in the shadow of the Matterhorn. The combination of scenic beauty, lively mountain villages and European comforts, makes hiking in this area of Switzerland a sublime alpine experience. Lodging for six nights in Saas Fee is in an upscale hostel, complete with optional integrated swimming pool and spa. There are ~4-6 people per room. This is followed by a six-day trek in the Matterhorn valley staying at alpine mountain lodges each night. Both trip leaders have lived in Europe and are comfortable with German, the language of this region of Switzerland. During a typical day, we will traverse 8-12 miles with average elevation gains of ~2,000'. Participants carry their own gear during the trek.
