Saturday, January 13, 2018, 8:45AM - 3:30PM
Please join me for a strenuous hike on a particularly interesting stretch of the Conestoga trail. We will meet in the parking lot of the Holtwood Recreation area at 8:45 AM. For the address you can use 276 Old Holtwood Rd, Holtwood, PA 17532 (GPS 39.840537, -76.316491). From the meeting point we will car pool to the village of Pequea where we will commence our hike. Along the way, we will stop to explore the Wind Cave, reputed to be one of the largest tectonic caves on the east coast. Other notable highlights along this trek include House Rock Vista, Tucquan Glen, the Pinnacle Overlook and Kelly's Run. Hikers should be prepared for multiple creek crossings (remember this is February) and several long, steep ascents. These ravines will be covered with ice making microspikes or crampons mandatory. There are some steep and rocky descents to be navigated likely glazed with ice and participants should be comfortable with this type of terrain especially towards the end of the hike when you will be most tired. No cotton/jeans. Wear wicking layers and an insulating layer and bring rain gear. This hike will not be cancelled in the event of bad weather except for freezing rain driving conditions. Snow's-a-go! Bring a little extra food than you would normally carry. And a headlamp for the cave. Temperatures will be expected to be below freezing. Take at least two litres of water and make provision for insulating against freezing, as well as lunch and trail snacks. Sorry, no dogs on this one.
